Sonatas for the Pianoforte or Harpsichord with an accompaniment for the German Flute or Violin

James Hook (1746 – 1827)

James Hook was born in Norwich, and displayed his musical talents at an early age. He worked as a teacher, as well as composing, transcribing music and tuning keyboard instruments.

In around 1764 Hook moved to London and from then till 1820 worked in the various tea gardens that were popular in 18th-century London. He was an organist, teacher and composer, and gained a reputation for composing vocal music.

In 1776 he was appointed organist of St Johns Horselydown, Bermondsey and performed regularly both in London and in nearby counties as well as becoming highly successful as a teacher of organ and harpsichord.

Hook’s compositions include over 2000 songs – most notably ‘The Lass of Richmond Hill’.  His stage works were often produced at Drury Lane and Covent Garden Theatres and there are numerous chamber works, sonatas and concerti.

In 1820 he left London and died seven years later in Boulogne.

The six sonatas which comprise his Op.54 collection were written around 1790.

This edition is transcribed from the original publication and all marked tempi, dynamics, phrasing and performance directions are as in that publication. Original keyboard fingerings have been adjusted to reflect modern usage.

The original does not include any provision for the cello, and the part included in this edition is entirely editorial. Its use in performance is of course completely optional.
